Vegfest Bedford

I love my visits to local vegan festivals not only to see the delights that some talented people create, but also to support local independent businesses. VegFest Bedford was no exception.

Our trip kicked off brilliantly with the most amazing cakes by The May Bakery. My daughter was thrilled with her rainbow cake and I spotted my dessert for later – the red velvet cake!

We then powered up with some fuel from The Broken Spoon, in the shape of a seitan burrito, good old Mac ‘n’ Cheese and some sushi. Every meal I get from these lovely ladies is fantastic. They do takeaway from their base in Harpenden and they also cater for events – I can’t recommend the food highly enough. They also make wonderful vegan cheese. Enough said.

Next, we came across the inspiring Emily at Muddy Pig Jewellery who not only makes beautiful jewellery with a vegan message whilst raising two young children – she also runs a pig sanctuary! She’s a bit of celebrity along with Fella and her other piggies, as a result and has made into various newspapers and magazines. I don’t know how she does it all! But I have been thinking that my dog needs a companion…..

Waheed from Pumpernickel in Bedford had some exciting news that he’ll now be stocking fresh vegan lunches – another place for us to grab a bite on the go! Just so you know, he also stocks Vego chocolate bars. Just in case you need an emergency – (or non-emergency) chocolate bar!

He also had some kombucha and some cake mixes which were pretty tasty.

The amazingly scented stall at Iuvo Skincare was very tempting. The products are perfumed with essential oils and the soaps that we bought make the bathroom smell lovely! Beautiful, carefully crafted products, I’ll definitely be back for more!

Soul Cheeze had some truly delicious vegan cheese made from almonds. Its so much better than the cheese in the shops but it’s made in small batches as the process is quite long so it’s not something that the big supermarkets are able to stock – all the more for us! We tasted the ‘smoked’, ‘parmesan’ and ‘black pepper’. All were just scrumptious.

It’s really exciting to see so many businesses supplying vegan food and products, it feels like a big change is happening and radiates hope in these sometimes rather hopeless times. Thank you Peter for organising this event and to the businesses who spent time and effort to attend. It’s all making a difference.
